ECU & KRC Long term risk survey

Key Issues in Project Risk Management for the next 3 – 5 Years

This survey is available online at: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2010-risks

A word version of the survey is available by request from AIPM for those that wish to complete this by email.

What is the study’s aim?

The study aims to establish the key project risk issues that project managers need to manage over the next 3 to 5 years.

Who conducts the research?

The research is promoted and hosted by the Knowledge and Research Council of AIPM and designed by Associate Professor Dieter Fink of Edith Cowan University. The project has been approved by the university’s Human Ethics Committee.

What is a key issue?

A key issue is defined as one that poses a challenge (e.g. requires special attention) for the project manager during the next 3 to 5 years. The challenge can be brought about by one or more factors that will affect the success of project. For example, a risk item can be perceived to be a key issue due to the

  • increasing importance of the issue to the success of a project;
  • not understanding the nature of the issue due to its complexity;
  • continued difficulty in managing the issue;
  • changes expected in the nature of the issue.

What are the benefits of the study?

The data collected from the study will enable key project risk issue to be identified. They will be ranked so that project managers can get a sense of their relative importance. The findings will give guidance to project managers on where to focus their attention and/or resources in the foreseeable future so that project risks are managed as effectively as possible.

How will the study be conducted?

The study is conducted in stages as follows:

  1. The list of potential issues is provided to project managers who will be asked to rank them in order of importance for the next 3-5 years.
  2. The issues will be ranked according to the averages obtained from responses in the preceding stage.
  3. The ranked list of issues will be provided to the same participants again.
  4. Participants agree with the ranked averages or indicate their preferred ranking for each of the issues.
  5. Steps 2 to 4 above are repeated.

The study will be completed after 3 rounds when consensus will emerge as to key project risk issues.

How do you participate?

As a member of AIPM, you are invited to participate in the study. Participation is voluntary and you can withdraw at any stage without giving a reason. However, to ensure the effectiveness of the research, your participation in all three stages would be appreciated.

Only aggregate data will be reported in subsequent publications and individual participants will not be identified. During the study contact details will be maintained by AIPM so that the same participants are able to be involved in all three stages of the research. The researcher (Associate Professor Dieter Fink) will only have access to de-identified data for analysis.

How to complete the questionnaire?

You are given three separate sections. The first section request background information which will help to interpret the data that is being collected. The second section contains the list of risk issues to be ranked while section 3 contains descriptions of the issues.

The items in section 2 should be ranked according to their importance as a “key issue” to project risk management for the next 3-5 years. The most important issue should be ranked 1, the next important should be recorded with a ranking of 2 and so on. Please do not rank items equally. Your rankings should be recorded on the list against each item. Refer to section 3 for a description of each item if necessary. Please provide a brief description and include the added item(s) in your ranking.

Pre-testing has indicated that it should take about 15-20 minutes to complete the questionnaire.
