2008 Salary Survey

Summary

This survey indicates, on average, the Australian Project Manager earns $121,849, approximately $13,378 (~11%) superannuation and receives $16838 (~14%) in additional benefits. They have been working exclusively in PM for 12 years and are valued at, or charge, $173.00 an hour. Those with more work experience receive higher salaries.

The most commonly held project management qualification is the Diploma. Western Australia has highest average salary at $155,810. The mining industry attracts the highest average salary, at $172,462/year.

For the salary analysis, a subset of the data (1612 responses) was used. 753 responses were removed from the sample set. Removals were due to the omission of valid salary information, the use of international currencies, or, were from non-Australian working environments.

Background

This document presents a summary of the salary data collected in the 2008 AIPM Membership Satisfaction survey. The membership survey was run between 22/12/08 and 31/01/09.

The objectives of the survey were to:

  • determine membership satisfaction levels with the Institute,
  • identify areas where the Institute can improve services and provide ideas for new development directions, and
  • gather data on employment conditions for the Australian project management industry.

The 2008 survey attracted 2355 full responses from 8729 invitations, a 26% response rate. The 2007 survey attracted 1117 responses from an estimated 10000 survey group.
