The vision for the redevelopment of 88 George Street provided an opportunity for Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority to deliver an exemplar project in the area of boutique heritage office accommodation with high environmental sustainability credentials. The pivotal location of this project within The Rocks gave the potential for an iconic work that reinforces the image of The Rocks as a vital centre in the city and the Authority as both a patron of quality architecture and custodian of a distinctive property portfolio .The redevelopment of 88 George necessitated overcoming some significant challenges including fundamental reconfiguration for compliance without major heritage fabric intervention, meeting the requirements for Green Star certification, overcoming planning issues, stakeholder management, provision for a district cooling system and delivery of the podium canopy. The result is a successful balance between heritage conservation, sustainable development and commercial outcome that sets a new leadership benchmark in the property industry.
