Australian Institute of Project Management

Project Managed Organisation (PMO) Accreditation

AIPM operates an assessment-based accreditation program to recognise organisations which have embarked on a process to continually improve their project management capabilities on an organisation-wide basis - Project Managed Organisation (PMO) accreditation.

The PMO will be accredited to any organisation which has fulfilled, or part-fulfilled, the Recognition Criteria, and which has a process in place for continued improvement.

Most organisations will not be able to satisfy the recognition criteria in full, however this will not necessarily exclude them from being gaining the PMO. The aim of the accreditation program is to recognise organisations which have fulfilled all the criteria, but also to recognise those organisations which have made a commitment to a change or improvement process.

Organisations which are accredited the PMO will be entitled to use the AIPM logo, and the endorsement of being an AIPM "Project Managed Organisation".

Which Organisations have been accredited to date?

New organisations are undergoing the PMO assessment or are being awarded the PMO accreditation all the time - see who amongst your peers (or your competitors!) already has the PMO...

Why become a PMO?

  • In a competitive market place, the endorsement of the Australian peak body for project management gives comfort to prospective (and current) clients that your organisation has in place appropriate structures/methodologies/training etc for achieving successful projects, consistently.
  • A need to prove to other parts of the organisation that you/your department/business unit has achieved recognition from the peak body for project management – quite often other departments/businesses do not understand what the project management ‘department’ are doing, and their value to the organisation generally.
  • Similarly, a need to prove to general management that the project management ‘department’ are more than just a group of people thrown together to achieve a goal; project management is a specific skill requiring trained and competent personnel.

The Workshop

Upon receipt of your application, we will contact you to provide details of PMO Assessors.arrange a suitable time for a half-day workshop

The objectives of the workshop are to:

  • assess the current role and application of project management functions against set criteria.  Those in attendance at the workshop will be asked to comment on each of the criteria as it applies to current and planned processes;
  • to identify areas for improvement i.e. those areas where the organisation has not been able to meet the criteria;
  • to agree an action plan for continuous improvement.

To prepare for the workshop, the applicant needs to:

  1. ensure relevant people in the organisation are available, including senior managers, project managers and/or project directors;
  2. ensure attendees have considered the criteria, and to what extent each of the criteria is applied in their organisation, to their knowledge and experience;
  3. ensure Strategic, Business and other plans that provide evidence of the organisation's commitment to improving its project management capabilities, are available if required.

The agenda for the workshop is as follows:

  1. Introductions;
  2. Background on the AIPM and the PMO award program;
  3. Review and assessment against PMO criteria;
  4. Close

Fees

A non-refundable fee of $1,131.90 (including GST) is payable at the time of application.

Next steps

Following the application, Contact and work with a PMO Assessor to conduct the assessment workshop (please note that the cost of the assessment is a commercial agreement between your organisation and the PMO Assessor). the Institute will arrange for a PMO Assessor to conduct an asssessment workshop. After the workshop, the Assessor will send a report to the AIPM with his/her recommendation.

Presentation of the PMO Accreditation
Because the assessment can be undertaken - or completed - at any time, the presentation of the official PMO accreditation award can be made at many different events eg an AIPM Chapter event/seminar, or at a Chapter PMAA ceremony.

Review

The accreditation is valid for two years. At the conclusion of the initial 2-year period, the AIPM will conduct an audit to ensure the organisation has implemented agreed plans for improvement.

Additionally, the AIPM reserves the right to conduct a random audit at any time during the initial 2-year period.
